Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam denied bail again: Decoding the Delhi High Court order

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday denied bail to Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and seven others accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots "larger conspiracy" case under UAPA. It rejected defence arguments on prolonged incarceration, lack of direct evidence and parity with earlier bail orders, citing UAPA's strict bail provisions and pending witness testimony.The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail pleas of nine people accused in the “larger conspiracy” case linked to the 2020 north-east Delhi riots.The bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur dismissed the appeals of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Athar Khan, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima and Shadab Ahmed. All nine have been in custody since their arrests between January and August 2020 -- over five years.
