Bomb hoax emails disrupt proceedings at Delhi and Bombay High Courts on same day

In both cases, the courts were evacuated, hearings were adjourned, and massive security checks were carried out before the police declared the threats a hoaxTwo of the country’s premier High Courts in Delhi and Mumbai witnessed unusual disruption on Friday (September 12, 2025) after both received bomb threat emails within hours of each other. In both cases, the courts were evacuated, hearings were adjourned, and massive security checks were carried out before the police declared the threats a hoax. The first scare came in Delhi in the morning when the High Court’s official email ID received a mail at around 8.38 a.m. warning of explosions inside the judges’ chambers and courtrooms around midday. The email claimed, “Today’s blast in the Delhi High Court will clear the doubts of previous bluffs,” and warned that three bombs had been placed inside the premises. It hit the functioning of multiple Benches of the Delhi High Court, with several judges adjourning matters around 11.35 a.m., while others continued till noon before leaving. Lawyers, litigants and staff were escorted out, and security agencies, including bomb disposal squads, fire officials, and dog squads launched a sweeping search operation. Two fire brigade vehicles, two ambulances, and a bomb disposal vehicle were stationed inside the premises as a precaution. As the court building was vacated for screening, the evacuees waited calmly on the court lawns, with several choosing to use the downtime to have lunch.Proceedings eventually resumed at 2.30 p.m. after the Delhi Police declared the threat a hoax. “We have investigated the email, and it turned out to be false. There is no connection between this threat and the bomb threats received by schools in the last few weeks,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla.Barely a few hours later, around 1 p.m., panic struck the Bombay High Court after it too received a threat mail. Here too the judges abruptly left their courtrooms, and the building was gradually evacuated while the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, assisted by sniffer dogs, conducted a full-scale search. The court temporarily suspended its proceedings for nearly two hours. However, after an extensive search, the police confirmed that no suspicious items were found, and the threat was declared a hoax.At 3 p.m., the High Court returned to normalcy with some Benches resuming hearings.Mumbai Police Zone 1 DCP Pravin Mundhe confirmed it was a hoax and that the court proceedings resumed at 3 p.m. “A threat mail was received in the Bombay High Court, today. Thorough checking was done and nothing was found. It turned out to be a hoax mail. Normal court functioning has been resumed,” he said. The email caused panic, leading to the evacuation of the court premises as a safety precaution. The police said that the email was sent to the High Court’s official address and included a warning about an explosive device allegedly planted within the building.
